Simple melodic lines and hooks give way to solos, with space. FFRD's efforts began when singer Billy D William marshaled the forces of an accomplished group of veterans from the DMV music scene. Their goal is nothing less than sonic nirvana - obtained through the melding of diverse musical traditions into a form greater than the sum of its parts. Atop the groundwork carefully, yet ruthlessly laid down by drummer Kevin Shuss and bassist / sound-man extraordinaire Ethan Montgomery, Billy D William sings skyward with gospel soul, singer Viki Nova adds delicious harmonies while increasing the band's class considerably, Dave Eynck invites listeners into his world with cerebral chord voicings and sound, turntablist GERM mashes and scratches (real) vinyl, Gene Chapman and Ernesto Ponce play searing and soaring sax lines - close your eyes and imagine Cannonball!!! - while Paul Haney and his trusty laptop go from buzzy synth, with attendant envelopes and filters, to your classic hammond B3. ERNESTO J. PONCE BAND: Ernesto began playing saxophone at the age of 11 when his father, a drummer, bought him a sax from his work associate. Since then, Ernesto has delved into many aspects of music including playing keys, producing, music engineering, & songwriting. Although self taught on the sax and behind the desk, he has formal training as well, being accepted in 2000 into the prestigious Music Engineering Technology Program at the University of Miami on a saxophone scholarship. Since then he has engineered and produced at commercial facilitiesin Austin and Dallas working with independent artists as well as major label acts such as Pharrell Williams, Grammy winner Gregg Curtis, N.E.R.D, Devin the Dude, and Chamillionaire to name a few. Emphasizing in pop/hip-hop mixing, and also familiar with beat production, Ernesto produced a few cuts in 2007 on a nationally distributed LP for southern hip-hop pioneer E.S.G. In 2009, after working with and befriending Jon Crosby at 5th Street Studios in Austin, he was asked to tour with Jon's band V.A.S.T throughout the US and Canada. On the "Me & You" tour, Ernesto showcased his diverse skill set playing keys, sax, & running D.A.W on a tour that included 38 performances in 41 days. After moving to Baltimore in '09, Ernesto has concentrated on his solo work and has sought out creative opportunities sitting in on open mics, studio sessions, & performances around the Baltimore area.
Sowebo (South West Baltimore) is a community-chosen name for a historic area in the South West of Baltimore City. Sowebo encompasses the neighborhoods of Union Square and Hollins Market, Baltimore. At one point, the area suffered from decades of urban decay but, in recent years, this community has seen increasing gentrification. On its main thoroughfares, West Lombard Street, Hollins Street, West Baltimore Street and South Carey Streets, spacious three-story row houses predominate. Most are pre- and post-Civil War Italianate in style, but there are many examples of Early Victorian Greek Revival and Late Victorian Romanesque Revival . A majority of these homes have ten- to fourteen-foot ceilings, tall distinctive windows, wood floors, and plaster walls. Exteriors are brick and mortar facades with cornices and marble steps. On side streets and alley streets (which are common in Baltimore) a variety of two-story and two-story-with-attic rowhouses are found. An uncommon synergy prevails in Sowebo as residents, both longtime and newly arrived, work together through various committees and forums to enhance the area’s quality of life . An annual arts festival, called the Sowebohemian Arts Festival, is held in the streets around Hollins Market on the Sunday afternoon of the Memorial Day weekend.
