Sing a song of Shakespeare pays tribute to composers inspired by the famous bard. Exultate reprises its CD, The Present Time, with music by Canadian composers Freedman and Holman, and British composer Mathias. The centerpiece of the concert is Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, originally written for 16 soloists and orchestra. Michael Coghlan’s In sweet music is such art, for chorus, flute and piano, and Matthew Harris’ jazzy settings round out the programme. Guest narrator Josh Johnston illuminates the texts for us.

Meditations provides an opportunity for contemplation and refl ection. Eleanor Daley’s a cappella Requiem, composed in 1993, combines Latin and English texts, and features soprano and baritone soloists with chorus. In contrast, Franz Liszt’s Missa Choralis, written in 1865, uses the traditional Latin mass form, and is accompanied by organ. Often associated with a flamboyant compositional style, Liszt chose a more pious, conservative path for this music. Guest organist Daniel Bickle joins us for this performance.

Organized around the stages of celebration - anticipation, annunciation, celebration, adoration and jubilation - the music reflects a variety of emotions.
