Eugene Chadbourne also known as Doc Chad will present his 20th solo concert in Calgary on June 25th at the Ironwood Stage & Grill Chadbourne is a guitarist, banjoist, vocalist and composer who launched his career of independent recordings with a series of solo and ensemble guitar LPs largely recorded in Calgary beginning in the mid ‘70s. At that time, Chadbourne earned his living as a writer and editor on the entertainment staff of the Calgary Herald where he at one point was the youngest man ever hired as a reporter.. Returning to his native United States in 1978, Chadbourne immediately became involved with the so-called “New York downtown scene,” forming an influential partnership with composer and reed player John Zorn. Chadbourne presided over the debut recordings of Zorn on the co-operative Parachute label, named after the Parachute parallel art gallery center that had once been located on 10th Street in the Calgary Hillhurst neighborhood. One of very few to successfully integrate modern jazz and country and western, Chadbourne eventually headed the rock trio Shockabilly which recorded on both American and British indie labels. Chadbourne’s concert career in Calgary includes a pair of shows with Shockabilly at the defunct10 Foot Henry club, material eventually released on a live CD. Since the mid ‘80s Chadbourne has been involved in a steady series of international concert tours and collaborations resulting in hundreds of recordings. His 2013 concert season was highlighted by a solo performance at the Duna Festival in Belgrade, Serbia. Chadbourne’s fourth book, Dreamory, will be published in 2014. His 2013 CD release entitled Longview features Chadbourne’s “Real Calgary Song,” also sure to be part of the Ironwood set list. eugene
