“Eric Hoffman left a trombonist, returns a crooner. When Eric Hoffman was a kid growing up in Grand Blanc, he used to hang out at Sherm Mitchell's instrument repair shop and soak up the knowledge. "I'd been taking my horns there for years," Hoffman recalls of the shop, which used to be at S. Dort Highway and Lapeer Road in Flint. "I'd go in every so often and hang around with those guys. He invited me to his place a couple of times to play and just relax and teach me things and tell me stories. That's the best way to learn about jazz." Those lessons are paying off. And Hoffman, a crooner in the fashion of Michael Buble or Michael Feinstein, is back to repay the debt. He's putting on two free shows at 9 p.m. Aug. 3-4 at the Sugarbush Golf Club in Davison. Mitchell, his mentor and one of the best and best-known jazz musicians Flint's ever produced, will be sitting in. ”
