“Throughout the show, Gales played more to the spirit of Hendrix rather than a tribute to the radio music that has cemented his legend all these years. Every song was a jam, and with Gales singing in a much calmer, lower key than Jimi’s vocal roars, the frontman essentially reinterpreted each track as he saw fit. Backed by bassist David Pastorius and guest guitarist Tomo Fujita, the band took their sweet time playing their hearts out on each and every tune, with Fujita’s soft, jazzy leads contrasting with Gales’s thick, frenetic “chickin’ pickin’.” Gales was virtually exuberant the entire show, the delight obvious on his face as he played, and he frequently expressed his joy at playing in the heart of New York City. His face would contort with intensity as he frantically ripped through his fretbroad during solos, at one point even pouring beer over his guitar and then continuing to play through a towel to clean it off.”
