About
2007 has already been a year of great accomplishment for dumhi productions.
In May of this year, dumhi organized the One Leg at a Time tour (OLAAT), a three city micro-tour which featured some of the most exciting artists in independent music. Over the course of the eight-day tour, dumhi, Sankofa (Brooklyn-based rock band), and the Cosmic Funk Allstars (featuring Cee Knowledge of Digable Planets) performed in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. During the three shows, dumhi was joined by underground heavy hitters such as Tanya Morgan (Loud Minority Music), Spec Boogie (Loosie Music), and L.E.G.A.C.Y. (Justus League/Rawkus 50) as well as many others.
“It was very exciting for me personally,” said Haj, dumhi's producer. “To be able to bring together such talent and just go out and have a great time and get our music out was fantastic. It's definitely something I want to build on. I'm ready to start putting together the second leg as soon as possible!”
Still riding the momentum of OLAAT, Haj is putting the finishing touches on dumhi's third independent release in three years.
“The project is called Three Seats from Heaven. I don't exactly know how to tell you what that title means, but...it has several points of significance to me. It started because my boy described cheap stadium seats with the phrase. You know...when you're sitting so far up the bleachers you're in the clouds? Sitting in the clouds...cheap seats...it all said dumhi to me. It has come to mean a bit more to me though. More about getting closer to your goals. On the verge, maybe. Then add to that that it's the third dumhi album in three years, and dumhi initially had three members and...well... three is the magic number, right?”
As with previous dumhi releases, Haj handles all of the production on Three Seats, and emcees MashComp, Shameless Plug, and Flud take care of the majority of the vocal duties.
“Insightclopedia Brown wasn't able to contribute as much to this project as he did with They Call Me Bruce, but of course he is going to make an appearance. Logistics just didn't work out well for us this year. WHAT UP, BROWN?”
Longtime collaborators Vex-Blizzy and John Blake also make appearances as does NJ emcee iLife and Philadelphia soul singer Sabrina Cuie.
“dumhi is actually at an interesting crossroads. I think we are continuing to come into our own as artists. Vote Dumhi, our first album, was a complete experiment. They Call Me Bruce got better, and I'm very excited for Three Seats. We also are starting to gain a buzz and have built up respect from our peers, which is very important to me. We have shows coming up for summer and fall, and things seem to be rolling in a good direction for us. That said, we also are all beginning to focus on individual projects. I mean, when we met, we were a bunch of solo artists who started making songs together. We put those songs together and it worked, but we never stopped doing our own thing either. If anything, this experience has helped define our individual visions. Flud, Mash, and Plug are all working on albums now. I have an album called The Fermented Spirits Project (a collaboration with MicheleQJ) which is almost done and should be released later this year. Plug's band, the Yes Yes Y'alls, has been rolling forward, doing shows and working on an album. I'm not exactly sure what the future holds for dumhi, but I think it's safe to say we are in a much different place than we were three years ago.”
Three Seats from Heaven is due for release in August 2007 and will be available on iTunes and at www.dumhi.com. For more information go to www.sonicbids.com/dumhi or www.myspace.com/dumhi
