Kind words for Dumb Angel and "Ghost Dance":
"Dumb Angel, the stage name for Shaun Mason. The stage name in no way fits the intelligent music he has created. This solo debut by the mid-twenties Mason is sensitive and ethereal. In a word: gorgeous. Mason searches for his sense of place while picking out beautiful melodies on his acoustic guitar. Mason evokes Nick Drake, Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters), and Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) as he quietly explores his inner emotions. Mason's solo debut establishes him as an artist to watch." - Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music
"These songs are rivers that slowly stream through an infinite landscape." - Wim Bolujit, www.hanx.net
"Dumb Angel has captured a mix of subtlety, thoughtfulness, and melody that allows him to escape the clutches of hellish melodrama and elevate his music to a higher plane of existence" - Planet S
"tender, introspective folk tunes that take their sweet time and recall Nick Drake, Iron & Wine and The Smiths." - The Saskatoon Star Phoenix
"To put it simply, Dumb Angel sounds, well, angelic." - The Sheaf
Dumb Angel is the stage name of Shaun Mason, a 25-year old singer-songwriter based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The songs of Dumb Angel are hushed, spectral compositions built around Mason's ethereal voice and melodic, droning acoustic guitar. Taking cues from the work of such folk-based artists as Nick Drake, early Bruce Cockburn, John Martyn, and Iron & Wine, while indebted to such groups as Red House Painters and The Smiths, each Dumb Angel song is a luminous exploration of self and place wrapped in a beautifully crafted, slow-moving melody.
Mason has finally released his first album as Dumb Angel, "Ghost Dance". Building on the sparse beauty of his live solo performances, "Ghost Dance" features richly textured vocal harmonies, layered acoustic guitars and chiming glockenspiel that together create a unique, swirling one-man chamber-folk sound. "Ghost Dance" was recorded by Mason at his home, and mixed by Mason and Teargas Recording Tree's Steve Reed. Since its release, "Ghost Dance" has received both international attention, and numerous glowing reviews,
Dumb Angel isn't Mason's first musical endeavor. Perhaps most notably, Mason was a guitarist and founding member of the successful Saskatoon space-rock group Blood Music. Following in the vapor trails of The Verve and Spacemen 3, Blood Music released two albums and opened for such groups as Do Make Say Think, Elevator and Idlewild. Immediately following the demise of Blood Music in the summer of 2004, Mason was determined to further pursue his songwriting, and began to develop a solo act under the moniker Dumb Angel. Since then Dumb Angel has gathered a devoted following in Saskatoon, playing dozens of shows in and around the city, including dates in Alberta, Manitoba, and recently a string of performances in Seoul. Mason is currently planning Dumb Angel's first Canadian tour, as well as the follow-up to "Ghost Dance".
Mason is an active member of the Teargas Recording Tree, an independently run, non-profit artistic collective based in Saskatoon. Other members include Maybe Smith, Carbon Dating Service, the Cracker Cats, and Shuyler Jansen.
