DubCity Renegades / Press

“Reggae fans are in for a real treat on Saturday night as the area’s own Dub City Renegades play Jammin’ Java at 10:30 p.m. The Dub City Renegades formed back in 2008 from humble beginnings in the local Fairfax area. Over the last six years it has evolved into one of the premiere reggae bands in the DC area, playing for the love of music. thumb_120817110806 The eight-piece band is comprised of lead singer Akshan, Zach Dickie on drums, Andrew Myers or “Dr Dub” on keys, Nick Young holding down the bass, Mista Mensah on percussion, Evan Herring on sax, Mark Allred on trumpet, and newly added Jordan Hoyt on guitar. “Fans and newcomers to the DCR vibe can expect to see a band that loves to play music for the fun of it,” Myers says. “We always bring our high energy vibe to the stage led by our lead singer, Akshan.” The band’s unique sound brings influences of reggae, rock, dub, and roots music that it calls, “Island Rock.” That also happens to be the name of the Dub City”

“While D.C. isn’t the first place you’d think of when thinking of reggae music, one can be surprised to find that sometimes-the best places to look is where the home is. Since 2008, Dub City Renegades has been spreading the love with their feel-good, power reggae tracks- one District dweller at a time. After having the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica to perform in 2009, along with being honored at the Virginia Reggae Awards as “Best New Artist”, the group officially claimed their territory in D.C. with their self-titled EP back in November of 2011. Now, with a string of performances on the horizon (including a show at IOTA Club this Thursday), in addition to heading back into the studio to record a full-length album, Dub City Renegades shows no signs of slowing down this year.”

“If you don’t yet know the Dub City Renegades, or don’t know dub reggae, this DC-based band and their new, 5-song EP are great places to start. The nine piece crew has been rocking the DC area since 2008 and combining roots and dub sounds into an authentic, irresistible mix. 2009 saw them travel to Costa Rica to perform at Rainforest Aid, and in 2010 they won Best New Artist at the Virginia Reggae Awards. Now they’ve released their new EP, the band’s first, containing addictive tracks like “Fyah” and “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” There are songs here to move to, and laid-back grooves for chilling as well. This is an impressive debut recording from a talented band that has perfected their sound through relentless touring and hard work. Check it out. – Jon Kaplan”
