Sometimes I hear their voices,
Calling in the wind,
Weeping, sighing crying….
Where has the time gone?
Oh Lord, I can’t keep goin’ on.

Same old shovel, same goddamned dirt,
Different day, back’s still gonna hurt.
It’s nearly freezin’ but still I stink of sweat,
40 years of diggin’, but I ain’t quite finished yet.

So many holes, somewhere I lost the count.
Sometimes I know ‘em, but mostly I don’t.
Doing this for a livin’, ‘yeah, it pays the bills,
But when they walk away, there’s still a hole to fill.

5 o’clock this mornin’, gotta be done by noon.
(They’re) puttin’ my best friend in, It’s a terrible cartoon.
Man, I think I’m finished… feelin’ overrun.
Cover him with topsoil… I’ll never dig again…….
