About
Pavel Popov (aka ZOOM) is the head of trance-project FRONT. He's a native of Berdsk, a small town in the middle of Siberia.
Some of his earliest music-related memories involve listening to Boney M and Cerrone. His father bought and played records like these in secret- all Western music was forbidden in the USSR during this time. As a child he knew he wanted to work with music.
He started the electronica group All or Anything in 1990. This group played in Russian discos. He became a member of the famed Russian group Culture Bunker in 1992 as a keyboardist and programmer. Culture Bunker infused electro sounds with elements from Eastern music – leading to the founding of индуистской philosophies. International recognition came with the release of their 'Kalka The Warrior' album in 1994, released on Venture Beyond Records (Los Angeles).
Pavel adopted the pseudonym ZOOM in 1993 and emerged with a new sound; producing tracks that were more ambient and new age. His Zoom productions carried him from 1993 to 2004. This period saw him release numerous albums. Pavel was also busy working as a sound producer in different Russian sound recording studios. He was also the composer and the arranger for different Russian music projects.
Keeping his bases covered, he began working as a club DJ where he spun a mix of trance, techno, house, acid and chillout. Pavel made it to Ibiza in 2003, as a tourist, and feel in love with the scene. This was the genesis for his new transformation into FRONT.
He made a decision early on to not limit himself to studio production. He is a passionate DJ with a need to connect with dance fans. His work as a DJ gives him the freedom to experiment, which he brings back to his studio productions. 'Light!!!', his first album under the name of Front, was released in 2003. 'Second Breath' followed in 2004 and 'Wide Open Heavens' was released in 2005.
