Dearly Beloved is returning to the indie rock scene in the new year with their sophomore album RepoRepoRepo. †Since the release of their debut You Are The Jaguar in 2006 the band has toured with their explosive live shows while receiving critical praise from coast to coast. †
Singer / bassist Rob Higgins and crew are back with another fresh joint of their eclectic, punk-inspired rock. Niva Chow (singer / rock tigress) of Sticky Rice; guitarist Damon Richardson, formerly of Danko Jones and Change of Heart and drummer Hayden Menzies comprise this slightly leaner version of the badass Canadian band that in 2006 would play 40 shows in 60 days, each like it could be their last, and still return home hungry for more. Higgins, who is known for his work with the bands Change of Heart, By Divine Right, Tristan Psionic, Rocket Science, Doctor and for touring with Our Lady Peace as their bass player from time to time, is celebrating his first sophomore album. †“I've been fortunate enough to have 6 records released in the 11 years I've been writing,” says Higgins, “but I was never lucky enough to get the chance to create a follow-up.” †
Stand out tracks on RepoRepoRepo include “Who Knows?”, which says it all. †It's a song about coming to terms with the idea that the older you get, the wiser you get and the less you know. †With “Carnivale” Higgins explains that “the lyrics are pretty abstract - cloaked in metaphor and falling on top of each other - and musically the song is like mashing up Velvet Underground and Rush - which is truly bizarre (Geddy Lee is Higgins' uncle), but I love that sort of juxtaposition - always have.” †“Unsee” is a tragically beautiful cut with lyrics that are dark but heartfelt, personal and emotional. †Higgins calls it this album's "The Butler Routine", the psych-pop gem from You Are The Jaguar that became a staple on MuchMoreMusic and avant video channel Bravo! †
The recording process of Repo couldn't have been more different than Dearly Beloved's debut. †While Jaguar was massaged for 9 months to the day, Repo was written, recorded and mixed in 5 weeks. “Repo was all about taking my appreciation for the moment,” says Higgins “and carrying that over to the creative side of making a record - for better or for worse. No song was over-produced, they were layered with spontaneity, courage and honesty. †Our engineer described it as ‘art-rock with balls'. It would be difficult for me to disagree with that assessment.” † †
Whatever you decide to label this band, it is apparent that the music is beautifully eccentric, driving and infectious. So infectious, in fact, that after one listening session at their California home, songwriters Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk wanted to re-record “Who Knows?” with Higgins while he was traveling the west coast on vacation. Never one to pass up a chance for music, he stayed in L.A. and re-worked the song. The result is a special, limited edition version of a Dearly Beloved song coloured by Kreviazuk's masterful piano and produced by Maida with Higgins. A moment, indeed. †
All band members put in as much time and energy as they could muster and did a great job of bringing what they do best to the table, while also giving Higgins the space and freedom to see ideas through. Since the recording the band has become more streamlined, with the new quartet focusing on their live show. †It's becoming apparent that Dearly Beloved is a force to be reckoned with. † †
An insomniac, workaholic and avid fan of ice hockey, Higgins has recently decided to forego sleeping entirely and pull double-duty as an on-air personality and Fantasy Hockey Expert for XM Radio and gretzky.com, “I talk about hockey - on the radio - it's like a dream - I'm still in shock really - it's dark when i get up.” †And working for the Great One himself no less! ††With XM's membership approaching half a million and Rob's weekly appearances on the nationally broadcasted Live From Gretzky's radio show HIggins has been rubbing his shoulders with hockey legends and personalities – and leaving a mark of his own!
†For now Dearly Beloved will continue to tour constantly and look at leaving the confines of Canada for the first time. Asia beckons and who are they to say no? †Audiences, both here and abroad, can expect more rock, more great songs and a better Dearly Beloved that will still make you wanna shake yer ass, only now a little bit harder. †
