Their sound is truly innocently beautiful. I secretly want them to remain an understated splendor so I never have to fear they will be corrupted by the heartless music industry. At the same time, I want everyone to know about them. Just please, as listeners, don’t impose your mass-produced bullshit on their talent. I will kick your shins if you do! Even though they have released a lot of songs previously, including those on Provence, their EP is a great leaping off point in conquering the world of sound. “Never mind that Deadwood Floats’s cover of “Knives Out” is buried down at track 11 on their 15 song album “Jumping Into Bodies Of Water (And Happiness)”, it was the first track I went for. We all love tearing into bands who spoil our favourite tunes, but it wasn’t to be here. The guitar part of the original has been adapted gorgeously for the piano, but the song doesn’t feel transformed. .... ..Most of the album, though, is not about wallowing in that melancholy, but providing the resolve to push through it, either with rousing numbers like “Moth At The Light”, which opens with a jaunty violin part fit for an Irish jig, or the more subtly uplifting message of tracks like “Stairwell Song”. True, it’s a song mourning an “awful past”, but it’s an awful past “which I would never wish to change.” Deadwood Floats deal in hope, not regret.”

The song reminds one of “For Emma” by Bon Iver, melodious vocals that hover over folk rock notes. “Any combination of the following terms in an email is probably going to get our attention: "Ohio-based," "folk," and "Radiohead cover." Deadwood Floats (along with a picture perfect band name) hits all of those notes. They're from Columbus and they know their way around a banjo and multiple part harmonies. At the time of this writing, it is unclear if Jim Tressel knew they were getting tattoos for free. The original material on the record we've heard is fantastic, so it might be kind of a cop-out to go with the cover in this post, but the cover is tip-top. If you have any preconceived notions or trepidations about the genre, Deadwood Floats is the crash course you need to take... ..."We were in one of the dorms on OSU campus and were practicing this song I had just written and decided that we wanted to record it. Well, we were deciding where to go and stairwells have really good acoustics so we went to the tenth floor of Siebert and recorded it there (and) that's how the Stairwell song got that name," said Shultz with a laugh. "We actually pissed off a lot of people. They were having a floor meeting at that time - it was like 10 o'clock at night - they were pretty angry at us, but we got a good recording out of it." ”
