About
I am a composer by simple definition. A doting father and a loving husband would certainly widen the scope more accurately. I've many years in the music business playing with some of the greatest musicians in modern history. Lucky me! Born at Castle AFB in 1958 I was raised an Air Force brat that fell in love with The Beatles upon first seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show. My dad was a musician. He influenced me more than just about anybody when I look back on it. At first, guitar was my main interest. Then the bass, drums and anything with a keyboard on it. I wouldn't say I'm a "master" of any of these but I'm a life long student of anything progressive and interesting so I'm always learning. Bass players like John Paul Jones, Gary Thain and Chris Squire were my early heroes, but I think Jaco Pastorius was the greatest bass player who ever lived.
When I was a teenager I was heavily influenced by Genesis, Yes and Gentle Giant. Later on it was Miles Davis, Brian Eno and XTC. After I quit my first band in High School I joined a show band from Hollywood, complete with polyester jump suits. In 1977 I started playing bass for Naux and ex-Mannequin keyboardist Doug Rhumann. For about a year we played in the Central Valley and the Bay Area. In 1979 I formed my own experimental prog band Harlequin with Jeff Baker and Tony Carlsen. In 1980 I moved to NYC to join Naux and helped form Nona Hendryx's new band Zero Cool. Soon after China Shop was born with Steve Cohen, Naux, myself and now actor Richard Edson.
Eventually Steve and I formed the Empty House band with Jeff and Tony. The original goal was to re-define the pop song, mixing a little progressive and avant-garde music in the process. After a spirited run at success from 1984-1987 I retired to San Francisco deciding I'd had enough of music for a while. In 1992 my current manifestation as a composer was born. I managed to put together a home studio and began recording a series of ambient/electronic compositions inspired by Brian Eno and Bill Nelson. Mainly because they did their recordings at home on relatively cheap equipment. When the internet arrived I was blessed with enough material to upload 10 or so albums on several websites like mp3.com and IUMA. That's basically how I got my initial exposure to a much wider audience.
I signed my first recording contract in 2004 with Lotuspike, a nice progressive label started up by Jeff Kowal, Ben Cox and Daniel Pipitone. Two releases followed, Autumn's Apple and re: Karma. They did pretty well considering I wasn't that well known. While recovering from a serious illness in 2007 I began writing music for what became From Pale Hands To Weary Skies eventually released in 2008 by Spotted Peccary, a label that merged with Lotuspike. Currently I am recording several pieces for my next album titled Seven Sleepers. I have a couple of film projects, one with Walter Schmidt titled Afterlife and another with director Anthony Peter-Kelly called Call Of The Hunter.
