This is one of the longer-running farmers' markets in the province, with its roots in the 1840's at the waterfront. Between 1872 and 2009, this Market operated on a parcel of land turned over to the use of local farmers, at what turned out through time to be the main downtown intersection and the location of the community's Opera House and Public Library. As the City Administration prepared to demolish the present library building and replace it with a new one, it offered the market's Management Committee a temporary home at the City Centre, two blocks away. The Market moved there in November 2009, and expects to remain there into 2012 while work continues on the Market Block. The City Council has established an 'ad hoc' committee to examine options on location of the Market. The Farmers' Market continues to proudly boast of its range of locally produced foods, handmade crafts from around the county and regularly scheduled special events for the family. Our growers look forward to Saturdays on the Market, where they offer fresh-picked produce in season, and drug-free meats, with a variety of baked goods and ready-to-eat treats in a sociable atmosphere. Bring your family, meet your friends, shop the vendors, enjoy the talent of local musicians in the Market Cafe.
