Q: What inspires the lyrics?
A: I (Finn) typically have broad lyric ideas to start with and then Jared and I work together on the details. I find inspiration simply looking at the world, much of the time looking past what we take for granted. I'm constantly amazed by what humans have accomplished and the world has to offer. For example, I was on a public bus today and I thought about how incredible it is that humans are able to build such a big settlement that it requires a sophisticated service of transportation that all of its citizens and even visitors can use, just like that. The intricacies of what man creates are mind-blowing. Besides that Jared and I like creating scenarios or telling a story - for example, the lyrics of Puppeteer's Hand describes a man fighting insanity, ultimately succumbing to it but in the last chord there is some redemption so you're left to wonder at his fate. Using instruments to describe ideas like that instead of just saying it in lyrics is also something we think can be very powerful if you do it right. Thanks for the question!
