“Compared to What? proves itself a funkier, harder-driving version of the Les McCann/Eddie Harris hit from '68, featuring vocalist Courtney Lemmon, whose soulful take on the lyrics show them to be as relevant in these turbulent times as they were in the late sixties.”

Comprised of pianist/songwriter Richard Glaser, drummer Mark San Filippo and bassist Geoff Rakness, our Tuesday night resident band performs a fine blend of straight-ahead jazz, intimate ballads, fresh improvisations and swelling, blues-tinged arrangements crafted by music virtuoso and front man Richard Glaser. Joined by legendary tenor man Clarence Webb and guest vocalists weekly, the band has added a lyrical component to its singular approach to jazz that is creating instant song classics out of finely tuned compositions. A native of Santa Monica, California, Courtney Lemmon has been active musically since elementary school. Her early performances include fundraisers with such acclaimed artists as Natalie Cole and Robert Winter, as well as her solo Jazz debut at 15 with Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton. Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, Eva Cassidy, Fiona Apple and Billy Holliday all inspired her to investigate a wide range of genres. This appreciation for a wide pallet of musical styles led her to the Jazz and Contemporary Program at Manhattan’s prestigious New School University, of which she is a graduate with a high respect for the blues due to her studies with the incredible pianist Junior Mance. After New York, she returned home to LA and recorded her debut CD “Stay With Me” teaming with Grammy winner Mike Acosta as a co-writer, Producer and Saxophonist. The title cut “Stay With Me” garnered Courtney an Honorable Mention in the 2006 John Lennon Song Writing Competition. Courtney’s Santa Monica roots also extend out from her time at Santa Monica Community College where she was introduced to George Kahn. She appears on Kahn’s 2006 release “Compared To What?”, which charted in the top ten for the year in Europe. She also appears on his 2008 release singing “Use Me” on the album “Cover Up”. Courtney has spent 2 years touring Hong Kong as one of Standout Music International’s Artists, singing Jazz and Contemporary and free-styling with the local DJs in the club scene. The Independent Film industry has picked up on Courtney’s sound and she has been featured in a number of independent Films and Music Video’s in the LA area. Courtney performed at the 2012 Idyllwild Jazz Festival in California and has performs yearly at LACMA for their summer Jazz series with pianist, George Kahn, and the Jazz and Blues Revue. She is currently the primary vocal instructor at Rockstars Music Studio in Huntington, one of the largest and most successful private music schools in Orange County.
