The Chicago Junglebop Syndicate is a collective of musicians, projects, artists, and bands based around the burgeoning modern jazz breakbeat style in Chicago called Junglebop, started by Chicago jungalist drummer, IZM Records owner, and Muse Cafe owner/events coordinator- Dave Z Marsalek. This form of jazz is a logical yet intense pairing of jazz instrumentation, improvisation, standards with a fusion of bebop and jungle grooves based largely around new vocabulary in the rhythem section. Truly experimental and progressive, Junglebop is a Chicago scene in the making, currently underground, making waves in jazz massives around the city and several important jam sessions/workshops devoted to the improvisation and exploration of this style. The commencement of the monthly CJS Workshop has been finalized with south Loops REGGIES MUSIC JOINT at 2105 s State St. This is an open dialogue workshop where forward-thinking jazz improvisers are free to explore new ideas in groove, vocabulary and arrangement with the jazz canon. We are open to new members joining the syndicate. Make yourself known & plan on our monthly events coming up. 1st mondays through the summer (excluding august).
CHARACTERISTICS/SPECS::: drum samplers/pads, loop pedals, tweeked mic placements and mixing boards, horns through fx, and an electro-acoustic hybridization that takes the canon of jazz and adds the destructively potent grooves of drumNbass, jungle and fragmented idm/glitch MEETS the realbook, jazz instrumentation, bebop.
ORIGIN/HISTORY OF THE CJS::: Junglebop started with the Chicago live modern jazz breakbeat outfit Trioizm with Dave Z Marsalek-traps [SPIZM], Felix Moreno-bass [Future Rock] & Joe Grez-tenor sax/fx. After Trioizm recorded its legendary 2005 full length, Junglebop, on Chicago's IZM RECORDS, touring & intense gigging, the band broke things off with Felix leaving the band officially to pursue Future Rock fulltime. Surviving members Dave and Joe regrouped and started the urban cafe lounge/jazz club Muse Cafe at 817 n milwaukee ave to further the live jungle/jazz/freespazz scene in Chicago. The outcome? The Electro-Acoustic Workshop .
In Jan 06' Dave Z Marsalek organized material and arrangements for a new group featuring Joe Grez-tenor [Trioizm/The Yellowhouse], Brian Niebuhr-trumpet [Doppler Shift] & Matthew Golombisky -bass [Tommorrow Music Orchestra/Gunnelpumpers/Grilly Biggs] to host both the initial workshop and also a latenite gig at Weeds that very nite. The junglebop quartet was entitled Steps(74) with members of SPIZM , TRIOIZM , QMR Plus & Doppler Shift and featured burning rekontructed jazz standards such as: 4 on 6, night in tunisia, several originals, and many more. As they say, the rest is history, but in fact it's much more complicated than that. This is where the CJS was born.
With the success of the Electro-Acoustic Workshop, Dave Z Marsalek began spearheaded the idea of a larger collective stemming from Steps(74). After much verbal collaboration with local MC, Philasoph , lyracist, L. Zaide , and several talented forward-looking lions { Matt Nelson -keys, Fred Krubel-guitar, Aaron Koppel -guitar, Doppler Shift's Ray Pandocchi on tenor sax & Jon Markese on electric bass, & Aguafuego's JBeatz -flute/vocals}, the idea was set.
August 31st 06' premiered The Chicago Junglebop Syndicate at Weed's with 2 long sets of burning music. The repetoire traveled from a smokin version of The Vandermark 5's "Last Call" to Red Snapper's "Crusoe takes a Trip" to DJ Shadow's " Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt" using live samples to Wayne Shorter's "Witchhunt" and Baltimore's Injection Quartet's classic "The Chase" {a staple of the Trioizm live set as well}. Short video clips can be viewed on YOU TUBE-Freespazz and here on Chicago Junglebop video {type junglebop}. The Chicago Junglebop Syndicate is dedicated to the burgeoning art of live junglejazz, abstract techno postjazz and freespazz. The CJS invites you to join our syndicate and be a part of this new chicago-based movement. If you are around Chicago, let us know and make sure to keep abreast of the workshop plans.
The CJS celebrated it's 1-year anniversary with the 2nd Annual Chicago Jazzfest post-party at Weeds on Friday, Aug 31st 07. The nite doubled as a CD release party for the IZM Records release, ITS TIME, which manifests the best takes from the monthly series at the Muse Cafe CJS workshop {featuring John Bescup, Matthew Golombisky, Dave Z Marsalek & special guests: Lorel Zaide & Bill Martinez}. The cd can be purchased directly online by messaging Dave at http://www.myspace.com/chicagojunglebop or at www.myspace.com/spiz
"Chicago is under deconstruction...the new noise, the new thing...Junglebop is ONLY happening in chitown".
