The Big Purple Festival is a live music festival raising money for Kidney Research UK. It will be held on 4th October 2014 at The Tudor House in Wigan Description As part of our initiative to support local bands and artists in the North West, we also aim to raise awareness and money for Kidney Research UK. This is our first festival, so we want to make it HUGE! Not only do we want to raise awareness and money for a great charity but also to promote the local live music scene. We hope to be able to host the Big Purple Festival each year at different local venues in the North West and will run fringe events throughout 2015 in the lead up to the festival to give bands and artists the chance to play and promote their music. The Kidney Research charity is something very close to The Big Purple Festival's hearts. One of the organisers is a transplant patient, along with his mother and brother. Kidney problems are common and the number of people with serious kidney problems, such as kidney disease and kidney cancer, is increasing. In many cases, the cause of chronic kidney disease isn't clear, but it’s more common in people who have; -diabetes -high blood pressure -vascular disease (narrowing of the kidney’s blood vessels) -heart problems -a history of other types of kidney problems, such as kidney infections and kidney stones Kidneys are vital organs that remove excess water and cleanse the blood of toxins. When the kidneys fail, waste products and fluid build up in the body, making you feel unwell, gain weight, become breathless and get swollen hands and feet. The kidneys also produce hormones that help to control blood pressure, boost the production of red blood cells and help keep bones healthy. This means that if kidney damage is severe it can lead to high blood pressure, anaemia and bone disease. The four main kidney complaints are; -kidney infections -kidney stones -kidney cancer -kidney disease For more information on kidney problems and to take the NHS Health Choices Health Check, please click here: www.kidneyresearchuk.org/health-information/kidney-health-check To register as an organ donor or to find out more information about organ donation, please click here: www.organdonation.nhs.uk/how_to_become_a_donor/
