"It’s not easy to cite all the connections a band has. But you can hear early, rough-hewn Tom Petty (“Breakdown”); a bit of mid-arc Traffic (“Empty Pages”) and an inescapable scoop of Santana, and, (dare we say it?), The Allman Brothers. Yet Calabash is very much of its own time and place. Hatchet-blade musical flourishes that travel beyond the group’s perfect fundamentals are never forced, nor do they tip over into the trite or imitative. Calabash, as much as they are steeped in the past, are originals from A to Z – and from Evansville, Indiana, where they originate, to Nashville where they first tried their hand as solo flyers before joining forces. They make a stop in Muscle Shoals, although they might not know that yet. (Some of their work is redolent of Boz Scaggs’ brilliant freshman album.)"
