Sun May 19 13,
08:00 PM TBA, Chris Claymore Greve Fun, uplifting, danceable, upbeat
– those are the adjectives Calgary musician Chris Greve uses to describe Celtic
music.
His brand of Celtic music is a cross between folk, country, bluegrass and pop.
His preferred venue is a pub, with a party atmosphere that gets fans out of their
chairs, beer in hand, singing along to every song.
Greve plays with Calgary band Claymore and has his own solo act – both focused
on Celtic music.
Celtic music might not be what you’d expect to find in ‘Cowtown,’
but Greve said it’s tough not to fall in love with the infectious music.
“What we hear from a lot of people is ‘This is not something I would
have ever looked for, but now that I’ve come across it, I really like it and
want to listen to it more,’” Greve said.
Greve lives for the energy of Celtic and Maritime music, and he wants to bring love
of the music to Calgary audiences.
Whether he’s playing with Claymore or taking the stage by himself, the audience
is guaranteed to have a good time.
“It’s usually a big party,” Greve said. |

Mon May 20 13,
08:00 PM Awna Teixeira Awna Teixeira is best known as being
one quarter of Roots stars Po’ Girl who have toured the World many times in
the last 8 years winning fans and accolades at every stop.
The band decided to take a break in 2011 with Allison Russell touring and recording
with Jeremy Lindsay from JT & the Clouds and Awna Teixeira holing up in a Chicago
studio in March and April of this year with a bunch of musicians and Engineer Zach
Goheen.
The results are astounding and way beyond what anyone could have expected; including
the singer herself.
As I sit here open–mouthed, WHERE THE DARKNESS GOES brings a brand new freshness
and new found eminence to Roots Music which I didn’t think possible anymore

08:00 PM adams rib, Pretty Archie It all began in the basement of a Mississauga
home back in 1996. That’s when Derek Lathrop decided to use all his band experience
to form his own band, and adams rib was born! “SCENES FROM A CORNER STORE”,
the debut effort, was released in 1997. The band promptly hit the road and spent
the next two years touring Canada.
The road experience definitely provided inspiration for the next record, so in January
of 1999, adams rib convened once again in the Mississauga home and go to work on
the next release, “NEVADA”, which was released in May of 1999. The road
warriors knew they needed to hit the highway, and the band got to work. This tour
saw the band sharing the stage with Santana and Sting. They also did the festival
circuit, performing at Canadian Music Week, and NXNE.
Through the years, adams rib have toured Canada numerous times, sharing the bill
with Stevie Nicks, Nickelback, Judas Priest, Loverboy, Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows,
and the Allman Brothers, just to name a few. They also performed in Chile in 2009!
These guys are true road warriors, and you can be sure their experiences have inspired
many a tune.
2012 ushers in the latest creative effort from Derek and company – “the
mix tapes”. The lead off single, “Free Music” is one of the bands
most requested tunes and was released to radio in June. The single has hit the top
100 on the Mediabase Rock charts, and continues to build steam at stations across
Canada. Adam’s rib is embarking on yet another cross-Canada tour on Sept 13.
Be sure to catch these guys in concert. You’ll be glad you did! |

08:00 PM T. Buckley, Zachary Lucky Tickets: $15.00 T.
Buckley is a relative newcomer on the Calgary music scene but as a winner of the
2010 Calgary Folk Music Festival Song Contest, he and his band (Derek Pulliam and
Tim Leacock) were asked to be on the Folk Fest line-up for the first time this year.
Their genre is roots: a mix of country, folk, rock and roll and even blue grass.
Mandolin, guitar and harmonica mix to create a home grown and intimate sound; one
that is best represented on the small stages of the folk fest. |

08:00 PM The Fortunate Ones Newfoundland leads much of Canada with work on
the preservation of “Intangible Cultural Heritage.” Dr. Gerald Pocius
University Research Professor, Department of Folklore, Memorial University, describes
it as “Our Intangible Cultural Heritage is who we are, not who we think tourists
or other outsiders want to see us as.” UNESCO adopted the Convention for the
Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003.
The music and stories of Newfoundland represent an important aspect of that cultural
heritage. JUNO Award winners Ennis have regularly contributed to it in recent years.
“The Fortunate Ones” by Maureen and Karen Ennis clearly demonstrates
how music can not only preserve that past but maintain its popularity today. |
