The voice, the sweetness, the sensitivity…
Brianna de Alba is an ‘iconic’ artist
for today’s young generation
UNO MUSIC teams with top music and TV talents
to introduce a 17-year-old singer-songwriter-actress
who’s ready for her close-up
MIAMI, FL. August 4, 2008 – High school is a time when there’s lots of pressure to be “normal,” whatever that means. But 17-year-old BRIANNA DE ALBA realizes that you don’t have to follow some sort of life script in order to be happy. Has she spent a little less time socializing than some of her friends? Yes, but BRIANNA’s never regretted spending more time pursuing her artistic passion.
“I can’t always go out because I might have a show or need to practice,” BRIANNA says. “To me it’s not that big of a deal. I love singing, piano and guitar. Doing all this stuff is my idea of having fun.”
But that doesn’t mean friends and relationships aren’t very important to BRIANNA, who resides in Fresno, Calif. In fact, her wisdom and sensitivity let her share something special with her friends – the ability to listen to their stories and turn them into songs, like “Fall Out of Love With You,” that are comforting and moving.
“I wrote that song for my best friend when she fell in love but her boyfriend left her,” BRIANNA says. “It made a connection with her. If she can connect to it, there are thousands more who must be going through the same thing.”
Tall (5’8¼”), poised and confident, BRIANNA is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and has much in common with the large generation of young-adult Latinos who’ve come of age in a bicultural milieu.
BRIANNA began writing songs when she was 10, and now has a songbook full of compositions. She’ll take advantage of her summer “vacation” between her junior and senior year of high school to work on her debut album. And what a way to spend a vacation! She’ll be working with none other than super-producer/songwriter José Luis Pagán. Having collaborated with Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Thalia and Alejandra Guzmán on some of their biggest hits, Pagán is at the top of his field. But he also loves to work with new artists, and as he says, BRIANNA has the promise to be an “iconic” artist of her generation.
“I heard 10 to 12 of her songs, and from my point of view, working in this business, I heard four hits, which is a bunch for an artist of her age,” Pagán says.
While the Argentina native Pagán is renowned for his work with Spanish-language artists, he’s becoming better known in mainstream English music as well. BRIANNA’s project will be in English, and the sound will be the sweet spot between pop and rock that Pagán has such an intuitive ear for in any language.
“I’ve had songs recorded in Spanish, English, Portuguese and Serbian,” he says. “If you have a great song and a great performer, it’s going to be universal.”
Among the other BRIANNA originals that she’s partial to is “Stranger,” which she describes as “a really catchy, fun song to sing.” She’s also proud of “Games,” which is a savvy take on the games that immature guys play: “It’s about when a guy only wants you when he can’t have you because he likes a challenge.”
But her most inspiring creation to date is “Spread My Wings,” the theme song to the forthcoming TV series MESH Academy, in which she is featured along with other UNO artists. BRIANNA plays a student who moves from L.A. to Miami after receiving a scholarship to the competitive Music and Entertainment Senior High (MESH).
“Spread My Wings” is sung from the perspective of an aspiring artist – a feeling she understands well. One self-aware line even admits to a little envy when she sees a famous singer on TV: “The more I watch the more I see, that that girl should be me.”
MESH Academyis being produced as a partnership between UNO Entertainment and Untitled Film Partners. Producer/writer Leyla Sfier and director/writer Miguel Ángel Velez, both of Untitled Film Partners, are leading the project through pre-production.
Though she’s a novice actor, BRIANNA has plenty going for her, given her personality and fearlessness in front of an audience. “If you’re a performer, you’re an actor,” Sfier says. “If you can go in front of people and sing your heart out – and Brianna has that. She’s very funny naturally. Once you start shooting, it becomes easy. And Miguel Ángel makes it a lot of fun for young actors.”
Family will be an important part of the lives of the MESH Academykidsand it’s important to BRIANNA in real life, as well. “You always know that your parents and family are there for the right reasons. They raised me to be strong and to have good judgment.”
