That’s My Job

Brent Moyer & Uschi Moyer-Jenni

My name is Max; I guess I’m a purebred
Can’t quite remember, Stafford-something, I think they said
My Mama died fightin’, my Dad I never met
All I cared for back then was, am I getting fed?
People gave me good, good, good bloody meat
And then I’d scarf it down as fast as I could eat
That was my job

Then they changed the game and started poking me with that thing
I could never figure out what it was but it sure had a sting
When I got older they had another plan
They told me to fight my buddy and that I couldn’t understand
But people gave me good, good, good bloody meat
And then I’d scarf it down as fast as I could eat
That was my job

As long as I kept biting, as long as I kept fighting
They kept throwing me good bloody meat
You do all you can to try and please the man
Just to keep from getting beat

One day some strange people stormed into my place
They came to take me away so I tried to start a chase
I kicked and I bit but there was no escape
They put me in a prison and then they locked the gate
There was no more good, good, good bloody meat
But they still gave me food so I scarfed it down as fast as I could eat
That was my job

Then this little girl looked at me and I loved her right away
I thought I’d finally found my family and I pledged to obey
But while playing with that little girl she poked me with her hand
So I went for her, I knew that command
I thought I’d get some good, good, good bloody meat
And then I’d scarf it down as fast as I could eat
That was my job

Now I’m on death row, where did all the meat go?
I just don’t know what went wrong
I was just doing my job but I just couldn’t stop
Guess I was too far-gone
