“ Joining us was a young woman Ira who was serving as interpreter for Rens while he was in town. Between sets she asked me how I knew Myroslav and Rens, and I tried to keep it short and sweet. We stepped out to listen to one of the sets which included Vienna Woods. Ira asked, "Is it true that Myroslav recorded this in Vienna at Rens' studio?" "Of course I replied, we spent just over six and a half hours in studio working on that piece!" Sure the arrangement had changed a little since it was recorded in 2001 Myroslav had to work in Oleh's saxophone work into the pieces. ”

Durch eine zufällige Begegnung von Myroslav Levytsky und Lionel Lodge (Dauerduopartner von Rens Newland) in Budapest und den Willen etwas Internationales auf den Beinen zu stellen, kam die Zusammenarbeit mit Österreich zustande. “Levytsky has a genuine pianistic touch, with subtle nuances and a wonderful feel for rhythm. His constantly syncopating, colorful compositions were captivating with the richness of their unusual pattern of imagery and intonation. With his original interpretive style the composer recasts the works of piano masters Chopin, Debussy, Mussorgsky and Beethoven. This is not a reproach but a compliment to the musician, who works in jazz. His academic education and skill have helped Levytsky develop his own original composition and performance technique. The presence of Ukrainian motifs plays a far from inconsiderable role in his style, which is rooted not so much in Ukrainian ethnicity as in the piano style of the Ukrainian romantic composers. ”

“But the musicians admit that it hasn’t been easy. Braty Bluzu, Newland and Lodge found that logistics and overcoming cultural and musical barriers proved challenging. After meeting at the Sziget festival, they began exchanging songs via the Internet, and playing each others’ music. “When we first exchanged our songs through e-mail, we all were afraid to add our own style and technique,” Myroslav Levytsky of Braty Bluzu said. “We were afraid that the other person might not agree to the new sounds they were hearing.” Even the styles of composing were very different, Levytsky said. “We come from different schools of music,” he said. “Ukrainian musicians write down the notes of a song and then play it, while Westerners create the songs in their heads and then write down the notes.” While the name Braty Bluzu sounds like it might mean “Blues Brothers,” it is a slang phrase meaning to “Take off your jacket” or, simply, “relax” in Ukrainian.”
