About
Blueground Undergrass has developed a solid reputation and nationwide following by playing its multi-faceted music mix coast-to-coast. The band has always been known for exciting performances and eclectic arrangements. Its sonic “wall-of-twang” type sound pleases the whole spectrum of fans from hippies to cloggers to rockers, at time taking live Blueground Undergrass shows to the brink of almost moshpit type energy, yet all still guided with song-driven clarity along the way.
A veteran of the jam band scene, Jeff Mosier (AKA“The Reverend”) has consistently remained on the cutting edge of experimental music. He was a founding member of Col. Bruce Hampton's original Aquarium Rescue Unit, and over the years, has performed on stage with Widespread Panic, The Allman Brothers Band, Leftover Salmon and Phish. In 2002, he played banjo on Leftover Salmon's first tour after the tragic loss of banjoist Mark Vann. Mosier toured with Phish in 1994, prompting the best selling book “The Phish Companion” to state: “perhaps no guest artist has had as great an influence on the band's history as the Reverend Jeff Mosier.”
Blueground Undergrass is currently playing theatres, clubs and festivals all over the country with original members Mark Van Allen (pedal steel) and Johnny Mosier (electric and acoustic guitars) both back in the line-up. Legendary steel player and original BGUG member Mark Van Allen has played over the years with everyone from John Berry to Travis Tritt to more recently with Herring, Rogers and Sipe and was an original member of Sugarland. Playing fiddle is bluegrass great Owen Saunders. (Doyle Lawson, Jimmy Martin, James King Band, Warrior River Boys, and Dread Clampitt) Jack Watson plays drums and percussion and former Codetalkers bassist Andrew Altman rounds out the line-up with his diverse skills both on acoustic and electric bass. The band is currently touring and preparing for the recording of their fifth release which will be a live CD/DVD to be recorded in spring or summer of 2009 live from an underground cave venue in Tennessee ironically called “Bluegrass Underground.” The film/album will be a collection of new material, old songs revisited and a retrospective documentary film of the bands career, friends and influences. It will be called “Blueground Undergrass live at Bluegrass Underground.”
