About
- Blind Gun Dog -
Why not check out a recent piece posted by "Bock The Robber" on his blog,
blind-gun-dog-monsters-of-rock We don't remember much of that day... but believe it to be true !
At first glance Blind Gun Dog would appear to be just another 90's pub rock band, but closer inspection will reveal a more complex beast.A chance phone call from drummer Nevil Thornton to guitarist and harp player Edwin Ryan, began a collaboration which lasted almost ten years. Nev had been approached by Joe Deegan, singer and guitarist, with the prospect of starting a blues/rock band, but with the goal of creating an original set. And did Nev know a guitarist... He did! Nev and Ed had worked together in many bands since the mid 80's and here was another oppertunity, now with Joe, to continue that partnership. So with the core members sorted, the next task was to find a bass player, a task that was to be repeated many times over the next ten years. Mark Hennessey, Dave Victory, Robbie Craven, Eddy Jackson, Tony Steele and Martin Arthur all joined the Gun Dogs on stage.
The bands earliest recordings included original tracks "Cry Baby", "Face The Future" and "Young Man's Blues", which although blues based, showed a rockier edge more akin to Cream or Free. Later recordings began to broaden the scope of the band and the contributions of saxophonist Michael Buckley on songs like "Socialise" and "Wag Your Tail" allowed for a more sophisticated sound, leading Kathryn McKinney in Hot Press to say- "The playing is flawless... Blind Gun Dog operate in the Steely Dan-ish adult pop field and they are very good at it." Although encouraged by such reviews it is the Dublin bar-gig scene, Eamon Dorans, JJ smyths, the International and residencies in Barnstormers which lead to some of the bands finest work. "Wind Blows" and "Wish It Was A Dream" were written with the larger venues in mind and festivals like the Black Hills, for the Devils Disciples, give the band the opportunity to perform them to their full.
Despite a growing fan base, by the end of the 90's the Gun Dogs found it more and more difficult to find venues to play in and eventually the departure of guitarist Ed Ryan led to the end of Blind Gun Dog. This Selection of both studio and live recordings hopes to capture the essence of Blind Gun Dog, from their early blues roots through to the powerful final recordings, which nearly ten years on still sound honest and fresh.
