Although their influences are clearly different and each song is completely unique, the essence and effect of their album All in the Past is the same. One minute you want to dance round the room like an eejit, the next you're playing the air mandolin and within three or four plays you'll be singing every harmony to every song. An absolute classic combo of great stomping tunes, sensitive lyrics and heart-wrenching melodies. Modern English folk at its best with more than a hint of the ancient Celt thrown in for good measure. “Sean Amor and Daryl Ball share lead vocals and their gritty melodic timbres compliment each other well in a kind of home-spun harmony, and also stand up solo. Their finest moments here are when they indulge in their talent for Jaunty roots pop tunes. ‘Two Steps Back’ is a simple perky pop song lifted by some percussive drive. The anxious melodies on the subdued, if still jangling ‘Permanent Winter’ could be the album’s understated high point. Similarly ‘The Girl With Cartoon Eyes’ lays the foundation for their best Petty-esque rock number. ‘Ghosts’, with its swirling attractive folk-rock mix of violins, mandolin. Elsewhere the agreeable clip-clopping country of ‘Go React’ is Jayhawk-esque in its melodies and harmonies, and there’s rarely been anything wrong with that. “FIRE! SEX! BOMB! MEOW, MEOW! Words that make the heart beat fast, but not quite as rapid as when you hear the Bateleurs play live. They played their debut gig at 12BAR on Friday night - a marvellous set by Sean and Daryl; played acoustically giving it an almost folk vibe. Opening with a belter - “Permanent Winter” - other highlights included “Hello Girl” and an ace cover of The Beatles’ classic “Two Of Us”. “Girl with the Cartoon Eyes” got a great crowd reaction, sounding like a long lost Crowded House classic (and yes, that is a compliment). If you’re looking for a standard, paint by numbers group - then these are not the band you’re looking for; and for me the most exciting thing was hearing the potential this band has got. It’s exhilarating to think where the Bateleurs could be in 6 months time! Trust me, Life will never be the same once you’ve heard the Bateleurs live!
