Free Community Day: Raise the Roof with Girls Rock! DC Rock out with Girls Rock! DC and NMWA at this free open house for all ages! The first Sunday of the month is Community Day at NMWA, and we will be celebrating with an open house, free admission, and Girls Rock! DC performances. Youth and adult musicians affiliated with Girls Rock! DC will showcase their talents during a series of performances and help you discover your inner rock star on guitar, keyboards, and drums during instrument shares throughout the afternoon. Also, explore the museum, celebrate women in the arts, and check out our special exhibition, A World Apart: Anna Ancher and the Skagen Art Colony. Also, today is your last opportunity to view Freya Grand: Minding the Landscape—don’t miss out! ABOUT GIRLS ROCK! DC: Girls Rock! DC uses music education to create a supportive, inclusive, and creative space for girls to develop their confidence, build community, and rock out! Check out girlsrockdc.org for information about their summer camp for girls ages 8–18. GIRLS ROCK! DC PERFORMERS: Ella Moore, 14 years, is a singer/songwriter who performs professionally and is an artist-in-residence at Bloombars, where she is teaching others guitar. She got her start as a percussionist with the DC Youth Orchestra Program but credits Girls Rock! DC with giving her the confidence to be on stage. Nox is a D.C.-based band composed of four girls between the ages of 12–14 who love playing music: Razi Beresin-Scher, Stella Green, Claire Lewis, and Anna Wilson. The band formed in winter of 2009 and its influences include Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Runaways, The Go-Go’s, Helium, Wild Flag, Sleater-Kinney, and The Arctic Monkeys. Forty Whacks is a 3-piece from Washington, D.C. Drawing from alternative rock, punk, and power pop influences, this adult band layers lyrics dealing with issues of loneliness and isolation over sinisterly-sweet riffs. Basement Instinct, a band from Baltimore, Maryland, artfully crosses genres. Their music can be described as gritty, soulful, hard-rocking, and one-of-a-kind. The band’s influences include Erykah Badu, Radiohead, Sly and the Family Stone, and The White Stripes, Basement Instinct. G.U.T.S. is a hard-hitting and politically charged all-female trio. The band’s music builds on their years of varied experiences and grows out of that mystical place between classic rock/punk and new rock. G.U.T.S. has played in clubs, festivals, and backyard barbecues from Virginia to Connecticut. - See more at: http://www.nmwa.org/events/free-community-day-raise-roof-girls-rock-dc#sthash.gC8eHeGH.dpuf
