About
Dawn McClain's soulful path began in Los Angeles, California, where like so many great African American singers. Her musical foundation was established in the church, where Dawn began singing and directing choirs at age 11. After serving in the United State Air Force, she moved to Atlanta, GA and has been dazzling audiences with her unique sound ever since.
Dawn has performed at some of Atlanta’s best known venues, including Hard Rock Café, Sugarhill, Centennial Olympic Park and the legendary Apache Café, the iconic venue where local products like India Arie made their humble beginnings. Dawn has long been a crowd favorite at open mic events, jam sessions and showcases all over the city. Ask anyone in the know on the independent Atlanta music scene and they’ll tell you that Dawn is as good as it gets.
Dawn has performed for dignitaries and elected officials, opened for some of today’s hottest artists, and performed with industry. She has performed throughout the U.S. and in places abroad like Malaysia, Japan, the UK and Germany. Dawn has also fronted for local bands such as Delores Major and Rhapsody Le’ Chic, with whom she gained even more acclaim as an Atlanta favorite performing at the Annual “Wednesday Wind Down” Summer Music Series at Centennial Olympic Park.
Dawn may be best known, however, for the time she spent as the featured lead singer for Sol Factor. In the brief time that she worked with them, the band became one of the most requested acts in town, having been featured during a live national broadcast of the Michael Baisden show, and during V-103's wildly popular “Art and Jazz” show. The band’s crowd-pleasing performances even earned them a spot as the featured act during 102.5’s “Art & Soul” Summer Music Series at the W Hotel.
Influenced by some of the great female vocalists of our time such as Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin, it comes as no surprise that Dawn has been sought out by R&B legends like Roberta Flack, Jean Carne and Anne Nesby to sing background vocals. She also performs regularly with newer artists like Gordon Chambers, Gary "Lil G" Jenkins (formerly of the 90’s R&B group Silk), Phillippia, Gaelle, Smoki Brown, Darien Brockington and Nessa Morgan.
In addition to her experience on the stage, Dawn has also logged many hours in the studio, lending her vocal talents to various artists, including the Platinum Brothers, Darien Brockington and many others. Currently, Dawn is working with Dave "Jam" Hall and other up-and-coming producers on her debut solo project entitled, State of Emotion, due to be released in 2008.
With her star clearly on the rise, there is no question that Dawn is someone that music lovers across the globe will be excited to get to know. Her incredible stage presence and vocal abilities are undeniable and her desire to share her gift with the world knows no limit. The world better look out…here comes Dawn McClain!
