“I was shocked at how much I genuinely liked The Persuaders' music. From the beginning of Ghost Ship Sailors, I was struck by the power behind this album. It is dark and pained and pleasantly unexpected. The album has a rough-around-the-edges, dirty rocknroll sound that was left behind several years ago but has found relevance in today's scene. The members of Persuaders' all-star line up have succeeded where many others of the era fall short in proving that the crest that broke of the mid-90s was not for nothing. The song “Drove It” revives the feeling of falling in love with Arizona music 18 years ago. I also forgot how much I like Lawrence Zubia’s vocals. And I’m sure the others will grow on me. I am glad that there is a force driving these guys to continue making music. The Persuaders provide a new and fresh revival of a sound missed and certainly not forgotten. ”

If you've spent any time near Mill Avenue, you've no doubt heard tales of the glory days there, before the place was lousy with chain stores and vacant buildings. Up on the Sun caught up with Lawrence Zubia of The Persuaders to discuss the Tempe scene, his time on a major label, and The Persuaders new album, which may or may not wind up being called Ghost Ship Sailors.”

“The group features Scott Andrews and Thomas Laufenberg (both of the Pistoleros), Philip Rhodes (ex-Gin Blossoms) and Jim Swafford (ex-Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers). "I always write songs, and we just got together to see what we had," Zubia says. "It was fun, and it became 'Let's do this every Friday night.' Then it became, 'Let's record these songs.' We never even thought about playing out at that point." The group made its official debut in March. The material has a darker, harder edge than the Pistoleros' jangly pop-rock, but it is also accessible. That was Zubia's intention. "Although we don't have any expectations of record labels looming, I am still trying to write the next Beatles song," Zubia says. "I can't lie: I'd love to hear my songs on the radio, and it's hard not to write in that genre."
