Auktyon
One of the few Russian ROCK bands that resist easy comparison with Western sources, Auktyon (pronounced auction as in EBay) are consistently and wholly original. Emerging from St. Petersburg in the early 80’s Aukyton has become “as iconic as the Sex Pistols and as revered as the Grateful Dead” in their homeland and a cult band in continental Europe where they spend half of their time touring. Their sound is forever changing and evolving, emitting sounds that range from the rock-exotica of David Byrne to the swank and strut of Gogol Bordello.
They've traveled from psycho theatrics to lo-fi trickery and back, but with the constants (vocalist Lenya Fedorov's crusted-molasses voice, the clearly relished fret buzz, the tragicomic horns, and the truly bizarre stage presence of clowning percussionist Garkusha) still in place after 15 or so years, they are quiet simply the best music out of Russia. A favorite at a broad spectrum of international music festivals, the band has always been able to establish an understanding and deep connection with the audience, regardless of the languages spoken on and off stage.
