What do you get when you throw together, four guys from the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, who have a love for music and jamming, in room together with fat in your face riff’s, intense melodies and some deep cutting vocals? The short answer ‘downonthefirst’. A band you can find anywhere from the metal stage at Ramfest, to quite corners hooking up with some of Cape Towns more mellow and melodic bands.
The four piece band reluctantly puts themselves into the greater genre of rock, filing down to alternative rock, grunge, thrash and heavy metal. But they don’t want to pigeon hole themselves, preferring to let their audience disseminate their songs how they wish, making it a personal experience.
With their music being hard yet light, grungy yet clean, commercial but twisted, DownontheFirst can play the heavy crowds but will feel right at home on more diverse stages giving the public what they want, in a full frontal kind of way.
The hard working band consisting of Trucker (vocals), Wayne (rhythm guitar), Stanley (bass) and Giorgio (drums), have all played in various Cape Town bands, before the current line up of ‘downonthefirst’ was cemented around October 2010, with Giorgio the last on to come on board.
The diverse backgrounds have melted ‘downonthefirst’, into a band that’s forcing Cape Town’s musicians and general public, to sit up and notice.
Wayne’s guitar abilities have been described as, ‘interesting, spiritual and awakening‘, Truckers delivery, ‘..emotive and mysterious yet relatable’, Giorgia keeps the beats grinding and when Wayne heard Stanley jamming live, he thought, “sh*t man.. We need a bassist who can rock the shit out like that..”
All band members pitch in on the creative process. But the guys, all bring their own ideas to the band, which sparks new directions and sounds.
Spending long hours in his car everyday gives Wayne the time to listen to a wide variety of music. This, he says plants ideas deep down in his subconscious, coming up later when he gets home and starts jamming. Once happy with where the riffs are headed, he’ll bring it to the band, who then all pitch in to take to the final product.
Trucker, who handles most of lyrics, draws on his experiences in life, things that people can relate to in some form. Keeping things simple and straight forward when writing, Trucker delivers this same style on stage. But ultimately, the final songs have a piece of each band member.
The band is currently super busy with a long awaited EP released late in 2011, planning of a tour and the re-working of some older tracks.
After only their first gig, legendary South African, producer/ musician Theo Crous offered to record one of their songs, titled “Shiver“ at the Bellville Studios. With a nod like that from one of the biggest names in South African rock, I suggest you sit up and take notice of ‘downonthefirst’.
