Mercury Descends is a St. Louis, MO based rock/metal/prog band that started in August of 2004 in Tokyo, Japan. The band is currently comprised of members Blake Rockwood, Chris Caden, Cory Little and Nick Romano. Their sound and the influences they draw upon are as varied and eclectic as the band itself.
Their most recent release is an eponymous 3 song demo recorded in October 2012.
Innumerable Thursday night jam sessions in west Tokyo bars eventually brought the founding members of Mercury Descends crashing together like some grand cosmic realignment, shuddering and quaking in fits and spurts until all pieces interlocked. The original line-up of Alan Mabee, Blake Rockwood, Chris Caden, Ryan Morra and Nick Romano quickly settled into place drawing impetus from like-minded musicality and a desire for sounds not yet extant. The band quickly got to work writing original material and eventually released Japanic in late 2004.
As a result of entirely foreseen circumstances (almost all members past and present are US Air Force veterans), Ryan Morra was forced to leave not only Japan, but also Mercury Descends and relocated back to America. Finding a replacement was no easy task but fortunately Cory Little was almost in-house already. Cory and Nick had been writing music together in Sol Invictus for quite some time and he seemed like the logical choice.
With the current line-up set in February 2005, the next chapter in Mercury Descends history began in earnest. The band went about writing new original music that led to the release of Alignment in summer 2005 and Foreign Protocol in the summer of 2007. Most of this musical output was accomplished with the various members tossed by the winds of work and flung to the far corners of the Earth. Mercury Descends is nothing if not resilient and all five eventually settled back down together in one location; this time in Corpus Christi, TX.
From February 2009 to May 2012 Mercury Descends called South Texas home. They played shows and various festivals all over the Lone Star state making many friends and fans along the way. They released a four song demo and started the now infamous Promote the Goat charity event originally held at the House of Rock in Corpus and now at Cicero’s in St. Louis. As 2011 drew to a close and the promise of a new year in 2012 came rolling in, the scenery began to get stale. It was time to move again to hopefully greener pastures, St. Louis.
Mercury Descends relocated to St. Louis in the summer of 2012 and once again drew inspiration from a new setting. Using the backdrop of industrial, blue-collar St. Louis as muse, the band wrote, recorded and released a new three song demo in October 2012. They hosted Promote the Goat at Cicero’s and have won a spot on Pointfest 2013. They are currently writing new material for a full length release due later in 2014.
