Joel has been performing professionally for over 30 years. Born and raised in the Chicago Area, he grew up listening to hardcore blues and 70’s metal bands. He spent fifteen years in the south living in Nashville, TN and Mobile, AL during a period when he discovered the Grateful Dead, a musical experience that changed his life and musical style to what Joel now refers to as “Southern Fried Psychedelic Blues.” In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s Joel performed as the lead guitarist and vocalist in several Grateful Dead tribute bands including Scarlet Fire, Estimated Prophet and Potatoe Pharm touring the Chitlin circuit and SEC college campuses. Joel moved to the Bay Area in 2000 and has had the pleasure of performing at the Great American Music Hall and Sweetwater while playing with Mike Lawson & Friends in the early 2000’s. From 2005 through 2009 Joel was the lead guitarist and a vocalist for the Sonoma based original rock band Astral Kitchen where he wrote several of the original tunes found here.
