Lone Star Hippie started out as a few other free thinking Texas bands have. A vision, a guitar, and a garage. Houston, Tx founder, Michael Morris (The Lone Star Hippie) is not new to music. Mike got his first drum set at age 9 and by 12 was playing drums full time. At 13, Mike had the opportunity to open for "The Charlie Daniels Band" at Mickey Gilley's nightclub (Gilley's was famed in the movie Urban Cowboy). At 18, Mike helped launch an all original punk/rockabilly band called "The Brewed". They made an album, but mysteriously disbanded shortly after. Forever going into the infamous local cult file. You can find it on YouTube. Since then, he has played for a number of bands live, and/or in the studio.
Mike's main musical influence is from the love for 60's psychedelic music, but he is open to many other genres and it shows in his music. From a desperate, soulful, ballad, to a blown, fuzz driven, soul shaker. It's all driving! In 2003, Mike laid down the drumsticks and picked up the guitar to focus on writing ideas into song. Then in early 2006, Morris was called upon to join up with renowed Zydeco musician "C.J. Chenier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band". He was asked to go on tour playing drums, and backing vocals. C.J. Chenier is the son of Grammy Award winning legend "Clifton Chenier", who was the acclaimed "King of Zydeco". After many world tours and a 2012 Grammy nominated album, Morris decided to leave the group. Mismanagement of payment and credits by Chenier and the record label sealed the split, but Mike also wanted to achieve his own goals and passion, and felt it was time to move on.
Lone Star Hippie is truly who Mike is, and the band is the sole vision and focus for him now. Mike was blessed to meet Houston producer and engineer Frank Davis. In the 1960's Davis worked for Walt Andrus Studios along side record label International Artist, and recorded all of the legendary Texas psychedelic bands such as: The 13th Floor Elevators (Roky Erickson), The Golden Dawn (George Kinney), The Red Krayola, The Lost and Found, The Bubble Puppy, The Moving Sidewalks (Billy Gibbons), even Blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins and more. In the summer of 2009 Frank invited Lone Star Hippie into his studio to record their debut album. Jerry Page was asked to engineer the album. Jerry founded the Tx band "Crust" and has toured with "Helios Creed" and "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown". In 2010 Jerry Page joined LSH on the bass guitar. He is rock solid, with a raw, brilliant simplicity about him. Mike's son Chanse Morris, was a founding member and the original drummer, and is featured on the debut album. Chanse respectfully decided to leave the band to start a family and job career. Wishing all the best to him. After a period of looking for the right replacement drummer, Mike Lawson filled the seat. Lawson toured with renowned country musician "Billy Joe Shaver". He knows how to rock, and locks it in the pocket for the Hippie. Then there is Morgan (T-Bird) Wright on lead guitar. T-Bird joined the band shortly after the debut album was released in August 2010. (Mike's long time friend Stan Chambers was featured on lead guitar for the debut album). Morgan and Mike were school mates and grew up together. Along with Morris' own songs, Mr. Wright is bringing some of his songs and ideas to the table. He and Mike have been arranging and putting it all together for a second album. The Mojo is there! T-Bird can hold his own with some of the finest lead players around. The band continues to grow and evolve together. The vision is to make a soulful, psychedelic based music. A rock-n-roll groove gumbo, where the more ingredients you add the better. Throwing in some of life's personal trials and journeys through the mind, body, and spirit. With a better message for all in this modern day, where the hope for enlightenment seems to be fading...
