Corey Wagar, country music’s latest rockin’ phenomenon, takes the stage with a bold disregard for the female country mold. With this Jersey girl’s commanding vocals, infectious spirit and passionate songwriting, she is able to show her fierce vitality of the female force with its endless vulnerabilities.
“I was born and raised a Jersey Girl and have the ‘middle-child syndrome’ as I have an older sister and a younger brother”, smiles Corey. This sweet and sassy gal grew up with music in her blood. Her father sang and was a bass player in a band and Corey and her Grandpa did musical theater together, doing plays such as Annie, The Music Man and The Wizard of Oz. She was only 3 when she hopped onstage with her father for the first time and belted out, Brown Eyed Girl. Well…let’s just say she was able to nail it on the ‘Sha La La’s.’ Little did her family know that after singing this song, there was no stopping this firecracker.
She spend her childhood years listening to artists like Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, Shania Twain, Dolly Parton and The Dixie Chicks Fly album. “As soon as I heard those songs by The Dixie Chicks, I realized singing was what I wanted to do.”
She dabbled into songwriting at a young age and jotted phrases and lyrics down on the back of notebooks, tests and even skipped class at times to hide out in the music room. “I love how country music songs tell a story and share a feeling. For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to have that ability to touch people's hearts and to make them love music as much as I do.” Since then, Corey has teamed up with hit writers for her debut release On The Edge, which
included Jamie O’Neal, Billy Montana (Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, etc), Rob Crosby (Brooks and Dunn, Trace Adkins, etc), Lonnie Wilson (Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride, Luke Bryan, etc) and Karen Staley (Faith Hill, Terri Clark, etc) who “loves the focus and energy Corey brings to everything she does. She was born to be on the stage!”
With connections already garnered in the industry, she met renowned music producer, Kent Wells (Dolly Parton, Neal McCoy) and before Corey knew it, the album was finished and she was signed to Kent’s label, GTR Records (Go Time Records). “Corey is one of the most exciting new artists I’ve worked with,” says Kent. “She has a soulful, distinctive voice and has developed into a well-rounded artist with her strong songwriting and stage show!”
With her career accelerating rapidly at every turn, she has performed at high profile shows and has shared the stage with national acts like Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Little Big Town, Randy Travis, LoCash Cowboys, Gavin DeGraw, The Fray, etc.
When she’s not stomping her heels onstage, she enjoys hanging with family and friends and watching her favorite TV show, CSI. She’s also a self diagnosed ‘shop-a-holic’ and a cooking connoisseur as she whips up some of her family recipes in the kitchen. “My Dad is a chef so I always loved to be in the kitchen, watch and help out. Let me tell you, I can make some delicious cupcakes, cookies, pies…anything sweet has my name written all over it,” laughs Corey.
This country music’s spitfire has found her knack of “Jersey meets Nashville” music with her signature leather cuffs and either comfy cowboy boots or stiletto heels. Some may consider her to be in the infancy of her career but one thing is for sure; it won't be long until she reaches a pinnacle that rivals the country greats. And when that happens and she is asked if she can retain her artistic integrity, she answers, "Absolutely. It is all about being true to my fans and most importantly myself. Commercial success will never change the person that I am, although I will look forward to winning that Grammy!”
