Dan Dowell comes from Kentucky—the land of bluegrass, thumbpicking, and Bourbon whiskey. He grew up in Muhlenberg County (made not-quite-famous by John Prine), just a crow’s call away from Rosine, the birthplace of Bill Monroe and home of the Rosine Barn Jamboree. His hippie/biker/Baptist parents subjected him to everything from the Bee Gees to Queen to Ray Charles to Jimmy Swaggart. As a teenager, he discovered heavy metal, old school rap, delta blues, George Gershwin, and (worst of all) Weird Al. The result is aural confusion and a compulsion to write feminist blues rags, to yell about driving and politics over an acoustic guitar, and to play Beastie Boys songs on banjo.
A few years back, Dan bid farewell to old Kentucky and headed west, stopping just shy of the Pacific to put down roots in Santa Cruz, CA. After spending a couple of years on a horse ranch in the redwoods, then a few more in a little blue beach house, he now resides in a tiny Victorian cottage overlooking the spot where the San Lorenzo River meets the Boardwalk and the sea.
