The first thing that comes to mind when one see’s Smokey J is, “who is this guy”? She is undeniably far from the conventional female rapper. From her baggy jeans, to her fitted cap, Smokey is known for her distinctive style. Not only in fashion but also in her music. Hip Hop being her dominant area of expertise, Smokey J loves to paint Picasso like pictures with a hint of Jazz, a stroke of R&B and a shade of Blues. A native of Kenosha, WI and Eau Claire, WI, this 90’s baby has more than just raps to offer. A self-taught musician, Smokey J began writing songs at the age of 9 and within the next year began producing instrumentals for her self. 5 keyboards, 1 tenor saxophone, 1 trumpet and 1 BOSS drum machine later, she got her first taste of performing live. Since then she has performed at numerous school talent shows, The Boys & Girls Club of Eau Claire, WI, open mic nights all around the EC area, played with local artists from EC, to Chippewa, WI, down to Milwaukee and Kenosha. October of 2010 Smokey J released her debut mix tape ‘Underestimated’ which was released online, and then distributed in hard copies around the West Allis, WI area. During the summer of 2012 she and her cousins Mr. Greatworks, and Tone B (Blacc Ops) released a mix tape called ‘The Hustle 2.0’. A prequel to an unreleased mix tape created by her and Greatworks back in 2007. Smokey and ex-label Loud Noises Dynasty opened for underground Rap group ‘Potluck’ at Milwaukee, WI’s venue ‘The Rave’ that same summer and received a tremendous response. This show landed her to sell a beat for the first time to Kenosha, WI Hip Hop group ‘The Prophits 16’ who used the instrumental for their first official single ‘I Know It’ featuring WOKE artist Cynikal 3000. She has continued to dedicate her all into her music, and as of 2013 has released her first beat tape ‘Noises In My Head’ which was heavily influenced by horror films such as ‘Freddy’s Dead’. Smokey J is here to give the world music that will make them laugh, smile, cry, feel pain and happiness. She wants to give you something you can feel, and relate to so you know it’s real. She is here to continue the legacy of her Chicago blues kin, grandfather ‘Big Smokey’ Smothers and late great uncle ‘Little Smokey’ Smothers. Although Smokey has been around for a while, the best is yet to come and she refuses to settle or stop for any bump in the road to success.
