Dave Smith started playing guitar at the age of 8 and he has pursued the instrument passionately ever since. During his teens he played with several Saint John Rock bands including the Interludes, the Gents, the Hodads, the Magnetic Dilemma and Boiler Putty. Some of the people that he played with at that time include Terry Hatty and long time friends Rick Lester and Rick Beatteay.
In the early ‘70’s, Dave moved to Fredericton and took a break from the music scene for about 8 years. At this time he started studying jazz guitar, which naturally followed his love of the Blues.
He got back into performing when he helped form and play in the band Thunderhill which featured vocalists Joan Kennedy and Rollie Waddingham. In the late ‘80’s, he helped form and play for Blue Suede, a’50’s and ‘60’s Rock ‘N Roll band. This band played for 10 years in the Fredericton area and featured lead vocalist Danny Dobblesteyn.
Since the mid ‘90’s, Dave has played with several bands on various occasions for the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival including Bubba Can’t Dance, Southside Shuffle, Bird-Oiseau-Oiseau, Soul Oiseau and Big Giant Heads. These bands featured performers such as Pat Flanagan, Peter Kindred, Jacquelyn Vaillancourt, and Tom McAvity. On several occasions, Dave played lead guitar for the backing band for his friend and mentor Dutch Mason. He also played for the opening band for the Dutch Mason Tribute at the Harvest in 1994 with festival founder Rick Hutchins.
In 1993 Dave was honored to play with the Nashwaaksis Junior High School Band with his son Steve and Measha Brueggergosman, with whom he did a guitar-vocal duet. In 2002, he was honored to play with Big Giant Heads at the Festival and his daughter Heather performed a vocal arrangement with them.In 2007 Dave had the honor of playing a duet wth Larry carlton at a workshop. In 2010 Dave recorded 2 albums, At Last and Just Blues with a Touch of Jazz.On these albums Dave performs all instruments and vocals.
