One night in the summer of 2009, Ted Kuch and Sean Calvert found themselves drinking beers in the pouring rain and expressing their shared desire to start a music project that peeled back the skin of our American culture and revealed all the beautifully dark and grotesque elements that are so ingrained within it.
The result of this conversation became Vera's Lair, which for lack of a better description, is a dark psychedelic Americana band rooted in the likes of Morphine, Nick Cave, Chris Isaak, My Morning Jacket, and probably an ounce or two of a few different flavors found anywhere within our wide array of musical influences.
After a number of writing and rehearsal sessions, the two set forth to recruit a team of musicians that would materialize the concept of Vera's Lair that they had first discussed and had since began to polish. The challenge came in finding musicians who fully understood the best approach of adding something musically without necessarily losing the valuable open and sparse real estate in the band's sonic texture.
After a number of auditions, they succeeded in recruiting Steve Honoshowsky and Ben Ross on drums and percussion, and Mike Noordzy on contra-alto clarinet. Occasionally the band also recruits guitarists Joe Harvard and Mike Biskup to provide a bit more sonic flavoring to the mix.
The band is currently recording their debut album. Stay tuned!
