vulpes / Bio

For the past few years Bushwick resident Tanya Lam has performed under the moniker Vulpes, a nod to the most geographically advanced member of the carnivora order - the red fox. Similar to her animal counterpart, Lam’s presence in performance is sanguine, collected and impossible to shake. From sharing a stage with friends in a full chamber arrangement to impromptu and intimate performances in the late hours of the night, Vulpes has an beguiling affect on listeners new and old.

A classically trained multi-instrumentalist, Lam may call upon the use of a loop pedal to create intricate layers of strings and things. Floating above this arrangement, her voice carries out the juxtaposition between celestial resonance against the growl of a single barrel bourbon. Lam describes her sound as “ blues infused chamber folk” and has garnered comparisons to artists ranging from Melody Gardot to Jolie Holland, Chan Marshall and Tom Waits.

On their first release, Vulpes explores the contrast between classic and au courant arrangements in a four song EP - Reflets Dans L’eau. This collection of songs is the first installment in an ambitious long term project titled the Elemental Suites, and is reflective of the intuitive water element. Drawing influence from artists ranging from Sufjan Stevens to Cat Power and Feist, as well as the ghostly imagery of sailors lost at sea, this culmination displays a grand exploration of the human emotion. The recordings were self produced by Vulpes and were captured in the bedrooms and basements of each contributing musician. The project was then mixed by Jonathan Smith and mastered by Kevin Blackler. Reflets Dans L’eau is set to release this Spring.
