JJ Worthen performs in and writes for an endless variety of musical venues; he was raised under classical practice but his music is an innovative mosaic of pop, rock and jazz.
JJ studied opera at and holds a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition from Houston Baptist University. During his tenure at HBU, he masterfully studied voice, composition and a variety of instruments: voice with Mr. Robin Roewe, composition with Dr. Ann Gebuhr and Dr. Daniel Kramlich, piano with artist-in-residence John Hendrickson and Dr. Daniel Kramlich, and guitar with Mrs. Eve Woodard.
During the summer of 2000, JJ toured with the Continental Singers, traveling through 14 states in the Northwest United States. A year later, he traveled to England and Scotland with the First Methodist Church of Houston-Downtown to sing in the International Church Music Festival in Coventry, England for BBC Radio. In the summer of 2004, he traveled to Romania and Hungary with the First Presbyterian Church of Houston, singing at churches throughout both countries. That same year, JJ won Channel 2′s Gimme the Mike Houston contest, competing against approximately 2,000 Houstonians for a 2005 Pontiac G6 GT, a two-song recording deal with Sugar Hill Records and many other prizes.
JJ recently toured the Middle East and North Africa representing the United States as a diplomat. For 5 weeks he journeyed with Kareem Salama through Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Bahrain, Syria, Israel, Palestine and Jordan. While in the Middle East they played concerts, spoke at schools and also interviewed with and played on radio stations, TV shows, newspapers and magazines in each country; their tour was also featured on CNN and ABC World news.
JJ currently resides in Sugar Land, TX and is the Music Director at River Pointe Church in Richmond.
