Puzzlebox is a jazz octet that features the original compositions of bassist composer Keith DeStefano. He combines the traditional with the avant-garde, taut arrangements with free jazz, classical influences with genre music, angular bitonality with gentle lyricism, far out grooves with driving swing. Puzzlebox has recorded two CDs to date, and will soon be recording a third.
Keith has been featured in DownBeat, NPR, Channel 12 WHYY, 90.1 WRTI and radio stations across the country. In 2014 he was Music Director and arranger for a 17 piece big band at the OutBeat International Jazz Festival in Philadelphia. He has been awarded grants from the American Composer's Forum and the Philadelphia Jazz Project. Fortunate to be exposed to the rich Philadelphia jazz tradition, Keith has shared the stage with Terrell Stafford, Tim Warfield, Monnette Sudler, Mathew Clayton, Odean Pope, Bobby Zankel, Tyrone Hill of Sun Ra, Sid Simmons, Craig McGiver, Sonic liberation Front, and many other jazz luminaries He studied jazz with Tyrone Brown, Odean Pope, and Trudy Pitts. Keith received his classical training from Robert Riccardi, the former principal bassist for the Pennsylvania Ballet.
