The Chris James Sound is the brainchild of Los Angeles based musician Chris James Scornaienchi, a blend of jazz infused with the diverse styles he’s encountered during his musical career. It could be described as a bit more Jimi Hendrix than Marc Antoine, with a healthy dose of Marvin Gaye and Larry Carlton added for good measure. Chris’s first solo effort, “Everyone Needs Love”, is a mix of ‘60s rock and ‘70s soul juxtaposed with the jazz influences of guitarists past. “Remember the Time”, the first single from the album, exemplifies this blending of style with its classic soul arrangement and edgy guitar tone, serving as a taste of what brings The Chris James Sound to life.
Born in Oakland California, Chris began his music career at the age of sixteen. Raised in a household where the music he heard ranged from Duke Ellington to Bob Dylan, he adopted early on the philosophy of the Duke…“There are two kinds of music – the good kind and everything else”. Chris took this mantra to heart, and formed a rock band, Razor Edge, in high school. The band was in such demand that it played around the San Francisco bay area opening up for acts such as Metallica, Megadeath and Lita Ford (of The Runaways).
Already well versed in various musical genres, Scornaienchi was nevertheless eager to expand his repertoire. When a local player turned him on to Pat Martino and George Benson, Chris fell in love with jazz, which remains his true passion to this day. Soon thereafter he moved to Hollywood to attend The Musician’s Institute, where he studied intensively with then instructor Norman Brown, as well as with Scott Henderson and Carl Schroeder. After graduation he became a working studio musician playing a full six nights out of the week fine-tuning his skills on the jazz circuit; Chris so loved the experience that he did so for many years. It was only his desire to further develop his ear that pushed Chris to travel the world and discover new sounds that put on hiatus his studio career. But once overseas Chris had an epiphany—he knew he had to take the next step and become an artist in his own right.
Chris wrote, arranged and played all the instruments in this, his first solo release. “Everyone Needs Love” was written to simulate the gamut of emotions one experiences during one night of romance. From the anticipation of the evening ahead in It’s on to the serenity of a quiet embrace after an evening of love in All Colors, “Everyone Needs Love” is a dance through the wide array of feelings we all experience in our pursuit of passion.
