OPIEN / Bio

The Project -
The structural basis of OPIEN is formed by two Niko Stoessl and Philip Brunner of Vienna, Austria. The cooperation between the producer/singer/multi-instrumentalist Stoessl and the author/concept artist Brunner began in 1999, and, intensified over the years, ultimately led to the embodiment of the much anticipated joint project, OPIEN. In beautifully brutal form, it brings the enigmatic work of both artists together, coalescing music, words, images, and many other forbidden sensory delights. Accordingly, it's musical influences are widely diversified and nurtured by the last quarter century of increasingly innovative music history. From the ashes of the great post-industrial age, OPIEN is reminiscent of the early 80's tide that brought in Killing Joke, intermixed with the clean, meat cleaver precision of The Deftones, and other emotive exponents such as Trent Reznor and Iamx's Chris Corner. Set into orbit, OPIEN is in constant movement, always open to expand and to create new points of contact. Thus, the entity that is OPIEN functions like a hub with other artists and holds a very strong factory spirit in its mighty wheel. Correspondingly, this professional network has expanded in recent years. Besides other artists' contributions to the project OPIEN, Niko Stoessl, as a producer as well as an artist, has implemented numerous other projects, beginning with Bourne, a side project he has subsequently developed with Australian singer/songwriter Alex Bourne. He has worked with high profile musicians such as Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott, which lead to Niko contributing guitars and vocals on Dave Gahan´s last solo album “Hourglass”.
