I was brought up on a balanced diet of Motown Soul, 80's pop music, and 90's alternative rock. I cut my teeth singing in a funky but rockin' original band out of the Cleveland/Northern Ohio music scene; so to some of my people it seemed a bit unexpected when I picked up the acoustic guitar and taught myself a few chords. I decided to get out and see the country - about 30 states worth - playing open mics, cafes, and backyards. From there I found my voice.
My first record, Fishin' for Words, was anchored by an acoustic guitar/bass/drum trio, with lots of additional musicians. By the time I released Daydreamer, four years later, I had a six-piece band of superior players pushing my sound out across the Bay Area music scene. Then came my beautiful family, a successful home-based preschool with my wife, and time to musically simplify. Based in Oakland, CA and settling into the Farmer's Market scene five years ago, I now get to spend most weekends playing 4-hour solo acoustic sets among the people seeking organic produce, fresh Belgian waffles, and a spot in the jumpy house line - and I love it!
My brand new record Wrestling With Giants uses the acoustic guitar and voice as canvas and brush to paint a detailed view of today. Now, sometimes you need more than one voice, more than one guitar, and a couple of friends to complete that painting. So for these 13 tracks, I used what God gave me to represent the "giants" that the characters in my world grapple with, and the resolutions that we all hope for.
Armed with a funky percussive acoustic guitar and a clear, big sky voice over the urban cityscape, my intention is to sing my story to you.
