RootSoul Project / Bio

The RootSoul Project is a collection of talented and educated players based out of Wilmington, North Carolina that blends the soulful aspects of numerous genres from rock and blues, to reggae and hip-hop. The band has been together since Spring of 2004, and has performed alongside names like Widespread Panic, JJ Grey & MOFRO, Matisyahu, Corey Smith, Tim Reynolds, Culture, Victor Wooten, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Royal Southern Brotherhood, Badfish, Old School Freight Train, Bob Margolin, Terrance Howard and Nappy Roots. The RootSoul Project is just what the name says it is. It started as a project to fuse the styles of roots music that the band loved with the styles of rock & roll, hip-hop, and soul that they grew up listening to. The result is a sound that pays homage to their musical role-models, while staying fresh in its high-energy approach and delivery.

*****Singer/Songwriter Randy McQuay- 2012 Finalist @ IBC, Best Harmonica Award Winner 2012*****
(vocals, keyboards, guitars, harmonicas) fronts the constantly evolving project, laying down the soulful vocals that have become the calling card of RSP.

-In March of 2008 RSP was winner of Blues-A-Palooza, a contest hosted by House of Blues Myrtle Beach. The band was hired as house band for the summer of ’08. During this time they really increased their following from a tourist-based HOB crowd.

-In 2009, the duo toured the southeast with a little more focus on the music and the craftiness of songs, the duo began to play more intimate venues. Traveling mostly in North and South Carolina, the band sought more locations to spread their love of roots music. The band found that they could remain a very upbeat, danceable and energetic force as a duo. RSP developed a driving, rhythmic style not quite common among acoustic players. The year was a success with over 275 tour dates and thousands of fans.
-In Fall 2009 the duo went into Audio Genesis to record "Will You Be Ready?", a successful bluegrass/gospel record. The album features very traditional hymms and two soul-gripping originals. While controversial in some crowds, the album sold quickly and remains a Holiday classic.
-The next year RSP would record "Live at Jim's" with Capricorn Engineer Jim Bickerstaff in his home. After extensive touring and selling thousands of cd's, RootSoul responded to fans and gave listeners exactly what they wanted. (A "live" in studio recording.) After listening for months to a few takes of each tune, they made their picks. The result: an all original acoustic album featuring old and new material.
-After touring "Live at Jim's", the duo sought after a rhythm section to re-group. The band hired UNCW colleague Jason Moore on Bass. After discussions and auditions came Jason's reccomendation for Brian Mason on Drums. The rhythm section had experience collaborating in other bands. The band rehearsed for a few months to prepare for their summer tour of the Southeast.
-The band is currently touring a long list of Summer dates in 2012. They are also re-recording some songs featured on "RootSoul in ya Earhole" along with new material that will be released towards the end of summer.
-Following up success at the International Blues Challenge (Memphis, TN), Randy McQuay is compiling his first solo record. It will consist of unreleased older works and new material in which he played and tracked almost all instruments and vocals. Like RootSoul albums, "Solo." will feature multiple genres (reggae, pop/rock, blues).
