Nick Autry / Bio

Since he was old enough to keep a beat, Nick Autry has had the music in him, starting out on the drums as a kid and ending up playing in some of the toughest clubs in the Southeast. Upon entering college at North Carolina State, the Autryville, NC native decided to put down his sticks and seriously pick up the guitar, and the young Alt-Country singer/songwriter caught on fire in Raleigh during the early 2000s. After making the move to Nashville, Autry would evolve into one of Music Row's more popular “Jacks of all trades,” becoming a producer, background vocalist and sought-after recording engineer and songwriting collaborator, while playing Nashville’s clubs with several of his own bands. After a couple of years working on projects for other people, such as Buddy Guy's Grammy-award winning Living Proof album, Autry decided it was finally time to do a record for himself.

After putting together an all-star backing cast consisting of Audley Freed (Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule), Jon Graboff (the Cardinals, Shooter Jennings), Brad Pemberton (the Cardinals, Patty Griffin) and Hags Haggerty (Josh Rouse, Jesse Baylin), Autry hit the studio with producer Justin Francis (Anti Flag, White Wives). With Francis at the board they locked themselves away in an old landmark studio built by Roy Orbison and last owned by Ronnie Milsap, the studio in which Autry works today that is owned by Black River Entertainment (Craig Morgan, Sarah Darling).

The record is infused with the sounds of Americana, rock and country, and is intensely personal to Autry, who wrote all but two of the songs on his own. Of the two non-Autry originals, one is a co-write with former Whiskeytown vocalist Caitlin Cary, and the other is a cover of Tom Petty’s “Southern Accents,” a fitting tribute as Autry shares many of the sentiments of the Southern rock icon. Some songs play out like a movie soundtrack to Autry's life growing up in the North Carolina tobacco fields, while others carry the spirit of something Willie and company might have done in Austin circa 1973.

Nick Autry’s debut album, The Cause and The Cure, will be released this summer. Listen for it.
