This diverse folk duo with roots in Australia and Sweden are currently working on their next full-length album during a pause from touring after a massive year of shows, songwriting and the birth of their son, August. Only 12 months ago, Nick and Liesl were in New York for the premier of the musical Feather, named after the title track to their debut album and featuring songs from all three of their releases (Wyong River 2008, Feather 2011, Friend and Lover 2013). The musical was one of only ten productions invited to the 2013 New York Musical Theatre Festival. At the same time the pair wrote three songs for a US movie, starring academy award-winner Robert Loggia, Booboo Stewart from the Twilight series and country music legend Naomi Judd. The movie was recently presented at the Cannes Film Festival.
Nick and Liesl met in 2005 on the Central Coast of NSW and they have since made their mark on the Australian music scene with beautifully crafted songs, exquisite voices and unmistakable harmonies. Their chemistry off-stage shows in their oneness on stage and they bring with them a warm openness that connects with audiences wherever they go. Nick and Liesl have racked up over 60 festivals, such as Woodford Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival, Peats Ridge, Caloundra, as well as overseas festivals such as Reeperbahn (Germany). In their first five years together they completed just as many European tours while on the home front they have toured ceaselessly across the entire country.
Nick and Liesl’s skilful songwriting has seen them collaborate at home and abroad; last year travelling all the way to Nashville for co-writes as well as working locally with Gina Jeffreys on songs for her upcoming album. In 2008 the self-production of their debut EP won Nick and Liesl an ABC Award for Sound Production, and they have supported numerous big acts such as The Jezabels, Kate Miller-Heidke, Harry Manz and more. They receive ongoing support from ABC radio and have performed live on all capital stations as well as countless local stations. Their music videos have aired on Rage and in 2011 they performed live to 80,000 viewers on French TV while also receiving commercial airplay in France and Belgium.
“After reviewing their 2011 album Feather, I must admit that I had some expectations when listening to Friend and Lover. Occasionally, expectations with music are dangerous, but luckily they were met. Nick and Liesl have delivered, again. “ (Rhythms, Feb 2013)
“[Nick and Liesl have] produced an acoustic EP so good, you’d think they’d recorded it in some swanky studio in Santorini with Quincy Jones on production duties.”
(It’s My Kind of Scene, Jan 2013)
“13 tracks of amazing lyrics and sound. Honestly, Feather is one of the best albums I’ve heard in forever” (Rhythms, May 2011)
“Wow! That’s how I felt when I started this review, and that’s definitely how Feather will leave you feeling. (thedwarf.com.au, May 2011)
“gobsmackingly powerful & melodic vocals – think Angus Stone/Katie Noonan… thoughtful lyrics, fine musicianship… wonderfully eclectic folk/pop/soul style… simply beautiful album” (Reverb, June 2011)
“‘Feather’ is a lovingly crafted group of songs by a talented and passionate pair of songwriters with beautifully intuitive voices.” (Aaron Nash, dB magazine, July 2011)
‘combines classy acoustic-folk music with exceptional songwriting. I can’t recommend Feather highly enough. Nick and Liesl have definitely earned… 5/5’ Its My Kind of Scene 2012
