Sons Of Great Dane / Bio

Sons of Great Dane began with singer/songwriter Brent Windler and bass player Nolle Bond. After playing lead guitar in bands around the Kansas City area, Windler moved his focus towards song structure and lyric writing. He joined up with Bond, who had been looking for a project since moving to the area. They began playing shows opening for friends, using a variety of fellow musicians to fill in as drummer and lead guitar; however, Windler and Bond remained solid in the line-up. They put their first album, “Why Ramble?” together with drummer Nathan “Jr” Richardson, and recorded in Springfield, MO with engineer/producer Lou Whitney, whose past projects included Wilco’s “Being There”. The album was released in 2009 and received positive reviews from The Pitch, Powerpop Station, Daggerzine, and Absolute Powerpop, just to name a few. The band was praised for their mix of country and pop influences, and favorably compared to such acts as Wilco, The Old 97’s, and Big Star.
Since then, the line-up has become stable with drummer Brendan Culp of Making Movies and Evan John McIntosh of John Nash, and the band has played an active role in the Kansas City music scene, especially with the Midwest Music Foundation, playing in “Apocalypse Meow” annual benefit show. They have also been featured on the Kansas City compilation “Fountains of Folly”, and are looking forward to being included on the newest volume in April. On top of that, Sons have also opened for national touring acts such as Blind Pilot, Heartless Bastards, and Frank Turner. With a new record in the works, the band’s focus has shied away from their country beginnings and moved towards their pop sensibilities, but with a darker tone. Although the music has become slightly more somber, Sons of Great Dane are positive about their future.
