Mark ThunderWolf is a world renowned, award winning Native American Flutist and Recording Artist of Lakota and Eastern Band Cherokee Wolf Clan descent. Mark wows audiences across the USA and Canada with his unique talents playing the Native American flute. He has a unique ability to combine the ancient sounds of the Native American flute with the modern jazzy and melodic, yet soulful style music of today, which captivates every audience, and as a result he has developed an explosive following worldwide. Mark is what is known as a "Musical Intuitive," which means that he has a unique ability to "tune in" and perform in a unique way for his audience. This special "gifting" allows him to move his audience in a dynamic and profound way. In essence... The "Old Ones" play through him, and thus, his music is often referred to as "Breath Of The Ancients."
Mark was born in Chattanooga, TN, the son of a musician who had mastered many instruments during his lifetime. As a child, he watched and listened to his father play guitar, fiddle, organ and piano all by ear and would occasionally pick up his brother’s guitar and try to learn chords. As a teenager he bought an acoustic twelve-string guitar, learned to play rhythm and performed with local bands as well as singing backup and lead vocals. He later purchased and played a Dobro guitar. During that time, he was given a harmonica and quickly mastered it playing along with popular songs of the day and eventually purchased blues harps in every major key. Over the years he jammed with friends and played in several bands, performing at clubs and made many guest appearances with local bands across the country but always felt something was missing.
In the spring of 2001, while visiting a wolf sanctuary in California, he received his first flute. Mark does not read or write music, but as his father had taught him to do with any instrument, he began playing by ear. It didn’t take long for him to learn the rudiments of the Native American instrument. As he practiced daily, the wolves, eagles and various animals taught him how to connect with them through his flutes. It did not take long for Mark to find that “something he was missing,” in the connection he felt with all his relations while playing the Sacred Native American flute. He then began pursuing a full time music career by selling his beloved Harley-Davidson “Ethel” and used the money to record his first CD, “Thru the Eyes...Of My Brother,” only eight months later. His accomplishments since then have been numerous.
Mark’s newest CD, “Open Your Heart,” has recently been nominated in the prestigious Native American Music Awards, for Best Instrumental Recording. With this transition into a jazzy, upbeat feel, he has taken traditional Native American Flute Music to new heights and depths. It took Mark four years of spending time with the old ones to bring this collection of songs together to create the story that “Open Your Heart” offers for the listener. In order to make the arrangements flow from one song to the next, creating an album that offers both entertainment and healing, Mark worked with and co-produced this labor of love with three time Grammy winning Engineer, Tom Wasinger of Boulder, CO.
Since the release of his first CD, Mark has received nominations and awards in the Just Plain Folks Music Awards, the Native American Music Awards and was also unanimously selected as a showcase performer for the 17th Annual Folk Alliance International Music Conference in Montreal, Canada. Mark has toured extensively across the US and Canada, and his music is played across North America as well 14 other countries including the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Australia. He was the first featured Artist on NativeRadio.com, and has been featured on several BBC Radio affiliates and NPR stations. Whether playing solo or with his band, audiences everywhere enjoy the refreshing upbeat music blended with the haunting sounds associated with the flute that Mark has been able to capture and blend to reach the listeners across genres. Therapists, Doctors, Child Care Providers, and people everywhere recognize and enjoy the healing quality of the meditative music, a gift that Mark has been given by the Creator through the animals and living elements of the Earth.
